Brief grout lessonNon-sanded grout: This type of grout is used for narrow joints, 1/8" and smaller. This grout is smooth to the touch and can be removed and replaced. Sanded grout: This type of grout is used for wider joints, 1/8" and up, sand is needed for wider joints so that it is stronger and will not crack. Sanded grout is rough and grainy to the touch because it contains sand. This grout cannot be removed because it is too hard to remove with out damaging any tile, it can however be stained and recolored. Caulking and flexible grouts: These are used for areas were tile meets another surface such as a tub, sink, wood etc., and there will be slight movement. It is also in some cases used for the meeting of two surfaces of tile, such as were the counter top meets the backsplash and there is slight movement. This can help to prevent cracking caused by settlement. Water damage: If there is water damage in your tile installation, such as soaking rotted sheet rock behind your tile, re-grouting or staining will not help, the moisture needs to be removed and any damaged subsurface needs to be replaced. Tile must be sturdy and sound for the grout to hold in the joints. Mildew and mold: Found mostly in showers, grout and caulking with mildew or mold in it should be removed as much as possible and cleaned with a mildew stain and root remover to eliminate the mold and mildew then re-grouted and or caulked. The best way to keep mildew and mold from coming back is to dry your shower after you use it and make sure there is no water sitting on grout or caulking lines constantly. Sealant: There are two types of sealants, a grout stain, which we use to make sanded grout virtually stain proof, and a clear sealant, which is put on top of the grout, or mixed in. Grout stain makes the sanded grout unable to absorb anything (stains, dirt, grease, etc.) and at the same time keeps the natural look of sanded grout, the clear sealant lasts one to one and a half years and basically protects the grout from getting stained easily, this sealant will be removed if any cleaner that contains acid or bleach is used. We recommend cleaning with hot soapy water and a sponge, or simple green. Shower door frames: We do not re-caulk shower door frames because removing it could break the seal and cause a leak, also it is impossible to remove caulking off of the chrome or gold finishes with out scratching them.
